O rang Asli ….. (original man) are the aboriginals of Malaysia and other regions of SE Asia. Mostly to be found only in the highland rain-forest, some continue their nomadic life to the present day.
The Orang Asli, come from many groups (tribes). Each has its own language and culture, and perceives itself as different from the others.
The Orang Asli have many occupations and ways of living. The Orang Laut, Orang Seletar and Mah Meri, for example, live close to the coast and are mainly fishermen. Some Temuan, Jakun and Semai people have taken to permanent agriculture and now manage their own rubber, oil palm or cocoa farms.
About 40 per cent of the Orang Asli population - including Semai, Temiar, Che Wong, Jah Hut, Semelai and Semoq Beri - however, live close to, or within forested areas. Here they engage in swiddening (hill rice cultivation) and do some hunting and gathering. These communities also trade in petai, durian, rattan and resins to earn cash incomes.
A very small number, still semi-nomadic, preferring to take advantage of the seasonal bounties of the forest. A fair number also live in urban areas and are engaged in both waged and salaried jobs.
The Asli that we will visit are from the Temuan Tribe and the live on the highlands of Negeri Sembilan, just on the fringe of civilization. They are semi-nomadic (they move whenever they feel there is a problem with the land). Come visit them and find out more......
